September 1, 2012- FINLEY’S IRISH PUB AND EATERY
Lately, I have had this insatiable hankering for good Irish tunes, and good Irish grub. When planning the weekend for Brian’s 27th birthday, I found myself prowling the internet for a great spot for some brews and bangers. Spotted! Finley’s Irish Pub in Largo with an Irish band! Oh how the stars have aligned!
After a long, tiring, and exhilarating day of tree climbing, we cleaned up and headed out, bring along my parents (who typically enjoy a good UK meal).
Tucked away in a non-descript strip plaza off of Belcher Road and Ulmerton, sat Finley’s. It wasn’t much of a looker from the outside, but once we walked through the doors, it was adorable! Dark wood accents, green and gold signs, and Irish sayings galore. They had the typical Irish pub beers on tap, but I went with a Strongbow Cider. Brian started with a Smithicks and travelled off to a Harp (which he claims did not taste right…).
Our food was good! To start we had the appetizer that everyone was talking about on Yelp and Urban Spoon… the Shepherd’s Pie Quesadillas. Yes, Ireland goes to Mexico. I never thought I’d see the day, but I was overjoyed. They were delicious. We also had a plate of clam strips, which were meaty and plentiful.
For or entrees I had the Cajun Dip Sandwich, which was roast beef on a hoagie with a jus to dip. A little salty for my liking, but everyone else seemed to think it was great. Brian went with the meatloaf sandwich, which is pretty much exactly what it sounds like- and tasty!
The only downfall, and I am very sad to report this, was the music. The band was comprised of excellent musicians, but it was not what we were looking for in terms of sound and songs. The crowd seemed enthusiastic, which leads me to believe that they often frequent this locale.
All in all, we might be back. But, then again, we might not.
